VMS Certification
The challenge of purchasing Sta"m — and our solution.
The Challenge of Purchasing Sta"m
Despite recent improvements in the quality of Sta"m (Sifrei Torah, Tefillin, and Mezuzos), many Sta"m products still fail to meet halachic standards. The main challenges include:
Lack of Halachic Knowledge
There are many steps in making Sta"m. Each of these steps comes with its unique halachos that each person involved needs to know. Unfortunately there are many stories where people involved in the Sta"m making process did not have the halachic knowledge necessary to produce kosher Sta"m.
Lack of Accountability
Sofrim are not being held accountable to ensure each Sta"m product they produce complies with halacha. It is commonplace for sofrim to rely on a Magia to complete their Sta"m work without even marking the corrections. They leave it to the Magiah (proofreader) to fix the formation of letters, connect Tagin and identify any missing Tagin, while also checking for additional errors. This practice frequently results in many mistakes going unnoticed in the final Sta"m article.
Lack of Supervision
The supervision needed in the Sta"m industry to ensure Kosher Sta"m is not up to par. The result is that many people are buying Sta"m which they think is Mehudar, but in reality is only Kosher bedieved or worse is completely Pasul.
Lack of Verification
Consumers who only deal with Sta"m products a handful of times in their life don't know how to verify that the Sta"m they are buying is actually Kosher.
Our Solution
Vaad Mishmeres Sta"m's solution is to provide a Pekuach (oversight) on Sta"m products. Each Sta"m product that is certified will be given a Hechsher (certificate) verifying that:
Background Checked
The Sofer was vetted according to the criteria set by the Vaad Mishmeres Sta"m. This involves Halachic Testing — the Sofer was tested on his halachic knowledge by the Rabbonim of Vaad Mishmeres Sta"m and was granted a valid Teudah (certificate) from VMS — and Handwriting Analysis — the Sofer's writing was analyzed and approved by two expert Magi'im and a Rav.
Accountability
A background check was done on the Sofer, and a Rav sat down with him for a further evaluation of his character and knowledge. At this meeting, the Sofer signs that he will write each Sta"m product according to Halacha.
Oversight
Computerized Checks: the Sta"m product was checked using the VMS computer system for any added, missing, or substituted letters. Continuous Monitoring: since a verified Sofer's Sta"m products are continuously being checked by our computer system, the organization can ensure the consistency of his adherence to Halacha.
